Ideal F5 Fault Code: Return Temperature Warning Explained

An Ideal F5 warning usually means the appliance has found a problem with the return temperature reading.

This reading comes from a small thermistor on the central heating return pipe. Its job is to measure water as it comes back from the heating circuit.

When that signal looks wrong, the appliance may stop. This helps prevent poor heat control and further issues.

In many cases, the cause sits with the thermistor, wiring, or PCB. Therefore, the next step should be safe diagnosis, not repeated resets.

Why the Return Reading Matters

Modern heating appliances rely on accurate temperature data.

The return reading helps the control board compare water leaving and entering the heat exchanger. This allows the appliance to manage heat output more smoothly.

If the reading fails, the appliance cannot judge performance correctly. As a result, heating or hot water may stop without warning.

This is why F5 should not be ignored if it comes back.

Signs You May Notice

The display may show F5 on its own. However, other symptoms can appear.

You may notice:

  • heating cutting out
  • hot water changing temperature
  • the appliance locking out
  • one reset working briefly
  • the same warning returning
  • uneven room warmth
  • the display flashing again

These signs suggest the issue remains active. So, the appliance needs a proper check.

Likely Causes

F5 often points to a problem in the return temperature circuit.

The thermistor may have failed. Yet the issue could also involve the cable, plug, connection, moisture, or PCB.

Common causes include:

  • failed return thermistor
  • loose cable connection
  • damaged wiring
  • moisture near internal parts
  • poor electrical contact
  • PCB communication fault
  • incorrect temperature signal
  • internal component issue

Because these checks involve internal parts, they should be handled by a qualified engineer.

Should You Try a Reset?

You can try one reset if your manual explains the steps clearly.

A single reset may clear a temporary lockout. However, it should not become a habit.

If F5 returns, stop pressing reset. Repeated restarts do not repair a failed thermistor, loose wire, or control-board issue.

At that stage, book a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Simple Checks Before Booking

Keep all checks external.

Write down the exact display code. Then note whether heating, hot water, or both have stopped.

Listen for unusual sounds. Also, watch whether the same code comes back after one reset.

Look for visible water near the appliance. Check that it has power.

Do not remove the case. Do not touch wiring, sensors, sealed parts, flue parts, gas parts, or internal components.

What an Engineer May Test

An engineer will usually follow a clear fault path.

They may test the return thermistor first. Then they may check the wiring between the thermistor and PCB.

If those readings look correct, the PCB may need further testing.

This means the repair often focuses on the sensor circuit. It does not usually mean the whole appliance has failed.

Is F5 Dangerous?

F5 is normally a sensor-related warning. It does not always mean immediate danger.

Even so, treat any gas appliance issue with care.

If you smell gas, open doors and windows, leave the property, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

If the appliance feels unsafe, turn it off if safe to do so. Then arrange a Gas Safe registered visit.

Will You Need a Replacement?

Usually, no.

F5 often links to repairable parts, such as the thermistor, wiring, plug connection, or PCB.

Replacement may only make sense if the appliance is old, unreliable, or costly to fix.

A proper diagnosis should always come before that decision.

Reducing Repeat Problems

Annual servicing helps lower the risk of avoidable breakdowns.

It cannot prevent every thermistor issue. However, it can spot wear, leaks, poor condition, and early safety concerns.

It also gives you a clearer view before colder weather places more demand on the heating system.
